What You Need to Know When Transferring College

Transferring college is a nerve racking ordeal, but it can be made easier if you learn a little about the process. When you first decide to change schools, you’re going to be thinking at a thousand words a minute. Just take a breath, sit down, and figure out why you’re transferring. Whether it’s because you’re looking for a better program, a cheaper school, or you just want to move closer to home…make sure you figure out what you’re motivation is. After that, it’s time to look at which school’s you should consider. In order to make this process easier, let’s look at what all colleges usually ask for when accepting transferring students:

Good GPA: All schools will look at your current undergraduate GPA, which can be a little disheartening if you’re transferring college because you’ve been struggling. But don’t let that get you down, just try and stay positive. If there was a dip in your grades for any reason, make sure that you mention the reason in your application.

College Admission Scores: Whether you took the ACT or LSAT, your prospective schools will want to see how you did. This is when having a good current GPA can really make up for a lack of success on these early tests.

Academic referrals: When Transferring college, your new schools will always request a set of reference letters from your professors. Whether you’ve had a good relationship with them or not, you’re going to have to kindly ask for a letter on your behalf. So, better start sucking up to them now!

Personal Essay: Why do you want to transfer? That’s the question that will be at the center of your new school’s admissions office. This essay is your opportunity to explain your reasoning for leaving your current school and transferring to a new one.

Each school is unique with its requests, but these are the main four that you’ll need when transferring college.
